Nick Milanovic is a mediator and arbitrator focusing on resolving labour and employment law disputes.

Nick’s labour relations experience began more than 30 years ago as a picket captain and later as an executive officer and chief bargaining spokesperson for his local union. He practiced law for a decade as counsel with the Canadian Union of Public Employees and provided advice and representation in the broader public sector in a wide range of labour, employment and human rights matters. As counsel, he helped lead collective bargaining negotiations and litigated numerous grievance arbitrations as well as federal and provincial labour board matters.

Nick has taught as an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University.  He has been an instructor in a wide variety of legal courses including labour law, collective agreement and arbitration law, as well as human rights and constitutional law. Nick has also taught law courses in the Labour Studies departments at McMaster University and Brock University. Through his work at Carleton University, Nick was nominated for a city-wide teaching award.  In addition, his legal research into the intersection of bankruptcy and collective agreements was awarded a national fellowship and published in the Canadian Labour & Employment Law Journal.  He has also published two Public Law textbooks used for teaching across Canada.

He has been a part-time grievance arbitrator and mediator since 2007.

Nick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Labour Studies and a Master of Arts in Political Science from McMaster University, a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996.

Nick is on the Ontario Minister of Labour’s List of Approved Arbitrators and is a roster arbitrator in several collective agreements.  He is also a member of the Ontario Labour-Management Arbitrators’ Association, the Ontario Bar Association (Labour & Employment Law and ADR sections) and the Law Society of Ontario.
